Results are in – CIBSE Graduate Membership Survey

Thank you to all of our Graduates who recently participated in the first CIBSE Graduate Member survey. We received a fantastic response! As your professional body, we want to provide what you need from membership so the survey was a great way for us to discover what we are doing right as well as ways we can improve.

You, our Graduate members, rated the CIBSE Journal, CIBSE Publications, CIBSE Website downloads and CPD Opportunities as the top 4 ‘most useful’ benefits of membership. We were also pleased to see that 70% of you have employers who highly value your CIBSE Membership.
97% of you felt you lacked skills in a range of areas when starting work in the industry, such as Building Regulations and Project Management. In response, CIBSE Training have decided to offer all current and future Graduate Members a £50 voucher for Mid-Career College Courses or CIBSE’s Flexible Learning Modules!

Go to www.cibsetraining.co.uk to see the great range of courses available.

• Current Graduates will be sent the voucher via email on May 6, 2010
• New Graduate members will receive the voucher in the post once their application has been processed

It was interesting for CIBSE to note that 37% of respondents came from a ‘Mechanical Engineering’ background as opposed to 31% who studied Building Services Engineering at university. This result further reinforces the general feedback CIBSE receives all the time; that this is an industry which not only offers great variety but also the appeal that building services engineers can truly make a difference in every day people’s lives and in the campaign against climate change.

Other good news from the survey was the employment success of Graduate Members: 73% of respondents reported that they had a job in the sector within 3 months of graduating! In addition, 95% of Graduate Members are currently employed in the sector.

42% of you have been Graduate Members with CIBSE for 2-5 years, a further 15% have been Graduate Members for over 5 Years – if this is YOU, make sure you are on track to achieving your goal of becoming qualified as an IEng or CEng. Becoming qualified is an excellent step in your career as Sarah Gealy, who received her CEng at just 27 reports:

“Being chartered stands you apart from other engineers. It demonstrates that you take your career seriously and it is definitely recognised by fellow professionals. I think it is really important for engineers to make the effort to become chartered so that as an industry we distinguish ourselves as professional engineers. I believe being chartered will help me progress my career in the future.”
Sarah Gealy, MCIBSE, CEng, AECOM Senior Mechanical Engineer

To make a start, check how you measure up against the competencies involved for the qualification you want, go to www.cibse.org/membership to download the competency criteria. If you think you are ready, then start getting together you application, talking to your sponsor and writing a log of the projects you have worked on to help with your Engineering Practice Report. Remember, there are only two application dates per year, 1 August and 1 February.

A surprising outcome from the survey was the low uptake of membership with CIBSE’s Groups and Societies, only 64% of you were a member of a group and only 14% of you were a member of a society.

CIBSE has 3 excellent professional societies, Society of Light and Lighting, Society of Facade Engineering and Society of Public Health Engineers and 15 groups all related to specific areas in building services.
Better still, the CIBSE Groups are free to join with your CIBSE Graduate Membership.  Each of our societies are industry recognised and give members the opportunity to achieve a professional level of membership, you may be able to achieve the post-nominal MSLL , MSFE or MSoPHE sooner than you think! Societies

Groups and Societies offer comprehensive and dedicated information in their area of expertise. In addition, attending the seminars and events they offer their members is a fantastic way to meet other like-minded professionals as well as improve your knowledge in an area of interest.

How to join:
Groups:
1. just go to ‘Member log-in’ using your membership number and password to the main CIBSE website
www.cibse.org
2. Go to ‘Member Services’ and click on ‘My Profile’
3. Simply click on any groups of interest and the click ‘submit’ when you are finished
4. You will now be added to your group’s mailing list
5. Email
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for any questions you may have

Societies:
1. Go to
www.cibse.org/societies
2. Click on your society of interest
3. On each society home page there are details on how to join. Some of the societies’ membership will incur a joining fee

Another top result revealed that 96% want to progress your membership to become qualified. This statistic was supported by an overall trend in the survey responses calling for more structured support to achieve professional registration. CIBSE Membership will use your feedback to help revitalise your membership. We are looking into options to develop better online resources and support to help you all to achieve your career goal. Stay tuned!

Becoming a Chartered Engineer PDF Print E-mail
Why not think about becoming a Chartered Engineer?

Now that you have graduated, there are so many options as to where your career might lead you, that you might find making a decision near impossible.  One option to consider- is becoming a Chartered Engineer with CIBSE and the ECUK.

Download your CEng brochure for more information from the ECUK by clicking onto the image

Why become Chartered?

The letters 'CEng' after your name carry considerable prestige and clearly mark you out as a significant player in the world of engineering and technology.

How do you know when someone is a chartered engineer with CIBSE?

When you become a chartered engineer with CIBSE  you can become either a MCIBSE or both a MCIBSE CENG.

What are the benefits of becoming chartered?

1) The status of being part of a technological elite

Chartered Engineers are at the forefront of meeting the world's most pressing challenges and ensuring society's continued well-being and prosperity.

2) Recognition of your expertise and hard work

And once you have gained such recognition you are unlikey to want to relinquich it. Most Chartered Engineers remain regsitered until they retire.

3)High self esteem

Chartered Engineers place a high value on their award and derive a greater sense of satisfaction from it than from their other qualifications

4) Higher earning potential

Surveys have repeatedly shown that chartered Engineers rapidly achieve higher earnings than their unregistered counterparts- and the pay gap is widening.

5) Improved career prospects

The CEng award demonstartes to employers that the holder has experience, drive and commitment and has fulfilled the competence requirements of an internationally recognised standard.

6) Greater influence within your organisation and industry

Chartered Engineers command respect. They work at the most senior levels in all sectors of engineering and business.

7) Access to life -long learning

Chartered Engineers are kept fully up-to-date on the latest technological developments and are provided with many opportunities to add to their skills.

How do I get there?

The 2 Routes:

There are two routes into MCIBSE CEng membership - The Standard Route or The Alternative Route

How do I know which route is right for me?

The Standard Route is for people who have Engineering Council's listed Bachelors honours degrees plus further study (Masters) or an accredited MEng degree.

If you are not sure whether your degree is Engineering Council listed click here or read through the list of CIBSE Accreditted University Programmes to find out if your study was CIBSE accredited. Alternatively, you can get CIBSE to check your qualifications for you by filling in a Qualification Assessment form

The Alternative route is for people who have experiential learning and other qualifications not ECUK listed.

The Process for both: Engineering Practice Report

Down both routes you would right a 4, 000 word Engineering Practice Report which is based on the 16 competencies under 5 headings - The M21- Competencce Criteria for MCIBSE CEng.

For more information on writing your report and what to include with your application read the M20

The Standard Route: the quicker route to MCIBSE CEng

After returning your Engineering Practice Report you willl be asked to come to a Professional Review Interview- details of which can be found in the M20.

If successful- you will be awarded your MCIBSE CEng- this is your registration with CIBSE and the ECUK.

The Alternative Route:

After returning your Engineering Practice Report you will be asked to come to attend a Competence Review interview- details on which can be found on the M20.

If successful you will be awarded you MCIBSE only- this is your registration with CIBSE.

How do I go about gaining my CEng?

You can stop at MCIBSE if you do not wish to continue to your CEng. MCIBSE on its own is still a very valuable professional standard to have met- and professionally recognised. However, if you do want to achieve your CEng- you have two options:

Option One: Further study to top up your existing qualifications or to gain new ones

Option Two: The Technical Report Route and you'll be asked to come to a Technical Report Interview

For both options you will be asked to have a Professional Review Interview. If successful you will gain your CEng- which is your registration with the ECUK.
